Treatments for Prostate Cancer

Aside from skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer found in men. Statistics show that 1 in every 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point in their life. As a result, scientists are constantly researching new treatments for prostate cancer.

The prostate, an organ found only in men, is an important part of the uro-genital system. It is located below the bladder and surrounds the urethra, which connects to the bladder and allows for the evacuation of urine. The prostate, like any other organ, is susceptible to carcinoma and the need for new treatment is overwhelming. While many researchers focus on prevention, there are others who do focus on treatment. While prevention is important, for those already diagnosed with prostate cancer new treatment is necessary.

One new treatment for prostate cancer is HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound). This treatment destroys the cancerous tissue by using sound waves. Sound waves are aimed directly at the cancer and focused until they heat the tissue to approximately 90 degrees Celcius and literally cook the tumor away. The procedure takes 1 – 4 hours to complete and it is done under spinal anesthesia. As with many new treatments, High Intensity Focused Ultrasound is, for now, only available outside of the United States. It does however, show great promise. Internationally, over 6000 men have had this procedure performed successfully.

In conclusion, prevention is the key for those with a significant family history but who have not yet been diagnosed. For those who are currently living with the diagnosis of prostate cancer new treatment brings a ray of hope. There is constant research being performed in the area of prostate cancer and High Intensity Focused Ultrasound is the most recent breakthrough in the treatment of this terrible disease.

Cervical Cancer Smear Test – The Long Wait

Cervical Cancer Treatment and Smear Test – The Long Wait

http://howtotreatcancer.com/

http://www.cancertruth.info/

Suffering in silence is not the cure for cervical cancer but modern medicine is.

Cervical and breast cancer are two types of cancer which not only affect a woman physically but mentally too e.g. dealing with all the trauma after being diagnosed with the disease. A large percentage of women admit to living in fear of the big C, however cervical or breast cancer free women admit that the thought of contacting the disease never leaves their thoughts.

Sadly, self breast examination seems to be unimportant for some women who choose to ignore a health issue as vital to secure their well being, ignoring any indication that breast cancer is developing can result in the patient having to fight for their life. If an examination of the breasts had taken place in some unfortunate cases the whole scenario would have just involved treating the breast cancer and no involvement of an undertaker. Women need to wise up because if they continue to carry ignorance as an ally to help beat this battle – then they lose. Winning includes modern medicines. Early cancer treatment betters survival odds hence giving a patient the chance to carry on with their life instead of throwing it away.

Aside from bosom blunders where ignorance may have prevailed we have cervical cancer. Women need to be aware of all involvements i.e. what to expect throughout any cervical cancer treatments. The cervix is the lower part of the womb or uterus and is commonly referred to as the ‘neck of the womb’.

The cervix and its purpose are to help maintain a normal pregnancy. In non-pregnant women, the cervix has no obvious function. In the UK cervical cancer is down on paper as the sixth most common cancer in women. It is of the utmost importance for a woman to keep healthy in mind body and soul by having regular cervical cancer smear tests – oft times referred to as a Pap smear test. Smear tests are commonly carried out in order to detect any cell changes that come before cancer. It’s a waiting game, meaning, it can take years for these cell changes detected at the time of a cervical smear test to become cancer. Luckily some changes have been known to go away by themselves.

Women who waited in anticipation for their cancer results said they found it more of an ordeal coping with the wait than that of receiving the actual prognosis (cervical cancer).

http://www.beating-cancer-gently.com/

Suffering in silence is not healthy, not all abnormal test results indicate that cervical cancer is present. It is through early diagnosis and treatment of pre-cancerous changes that development of actual cancer can be prevented. Early detection is most profound to help fight the disease.

There are two types of this cancer; the squamous cell cancer and aden-ocarcinoma. Cervical smear tests detect the early changes of squamous cell cancer. Early stage growths of certain cancers can be treated with surgery or radiotherapy thus resulting in a cure.

Regular questions asked about cervical cancer are what the causes are; well there is no definite single cause, however study points the finger at a viral infection of the cervix or cancer sticks (cigarettes). Fags are a major health hazard relating to lung cancer, smoking is said to also increase the risk of developing cervical cancer and even the number of partners in youth trial runs of intercourse have also been linked to being connected to the cause. In the UK cervical tests are routinely performed every three years, lives are being saved because of this.

Females face a silent but deadly situation because; pre-cancerous changes of the cervix that show up on cervical smear tests unfortunately do not give symptoms. Undergoing a biopsy of the cervix is the way cervical cancer is diagnosed. The process is normally done with an internal examination called a colposcopy.

Treating cancer of the cervix will purely depend upon the severity of the disuse, meaning, has it spread to the pelvis. A radical hysterectomy or Wertheim’s hysterectomy may be suggested as treatment. It is at this stage that a specialist gynaecologist will conduct surgery. Radiotherapy destroys tumour cells that the gynaecologist cannot see.

Remember "out of sight out of mind", is not a healthy approach for a cure; a healthy approach is to keep it in mind and any cervical cancer symptoms must be kept in sight.

The Journey Through Cancer and The Seven Levels of Healing "The Journey Through Cancer" describes a revolutionary approach to cancer treatment and recovery by a physician who is at the forefront of integrative medicine in cancer care. Board-certified oncologist Dr. Jeremy Geffen has many years of experience serving as a physician, guide, mentor, coach, and friend to thousands of cancer patients and their families.

The Journey Through Cancer and The Seven Levels of Healing

By Jeremy R. Geffen, MD, FACP

As a medical oncologist, I have been honored to serve as physician, guide, and friend to thousands of individuals with cancer and their loved ones. Many heroic people have inspired and taught me a great deal about living courageously in the face of great challenges, and the unknown.

 http://www.cancertruth.info/

Through this process, I have come to understand the experience of cancer as a journey — filled with ups and downs, periods of calm and tumult, and extraordinary opportunities for healing and transformation. I have also seen, again and again, what powerful roles the mind, heart, and spirit can play in impacting every individual’s journey through cancer.

It is normal and common to feel overwhelmed by a cancer diagnosis, as anyone who has been through this experience can attest. Unfortunately, it is not yet normal or common for individuals and families to receive skillful, coherent, and comprehensive help in navigating the mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of cancer. For many, this is a painful and tragically missed opportunity. But it doesn’t have to be so.

Over many years of running an integrative cancer center, I was repeatedly asked: "Doctor, in addition to radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery, what else can I do to help myself? What should I eat? What vitamins should I take? What alternative therapies should I use?" And, "How can I deal with the mental, emotional, and spiritual challenges I am encountering?"

In searching for meaningful and practical answers, I saw an important pattern. I recognized that all questions and concerns encountered by patients and their loved ones fall into one of seven distinct, but inter-related domains of inquiry and exploration. I call these The Seven Levels of Healing and describe them in detail in The Journey Through Cancer: Healing and Transforming the Whole Person. They are a powerful guide for navigating all aspects of the cancer journey, including the mental, emotional, and spiritual — as well as physical — ones.

The Seven Levels are briefly summarized below, along with some practical suggestions for using them right away:

Level One: Education and Information. Understanding your medical care is important to achieving the best outcome. Feeling clear and confident about your care helps put your mind at ease and enhances your ability to enter the deeper dimensions of healing. Find an experienced oncologist whom you trust, and who answers your questions fully. Don’t make hasty decisions. Make decisions based on knowledge and understanding, not on fear.

Level Two: Connection with Others. This is a powerful component of healing. Family members can only do so much. Seek additional support from friends, clergy, and self-help organizations. Join a support group. Talk with others who have navigated the journey though cancer and found positive solutions.

Level Three: The Body as Garden. Conventional treatments remain the foundation of leading-edge cancer care. However, taking an active role in caring for your body also includes good nutrition, exercise, massage, relaxation, and other complementary therapies. These can nourish and strengthen the body, soothe and calm the mind, and invigorate the heart and spirit.

Level Four: Emotional Healing. Cancer can be an emotional roller-coaster. Everyone involved can experience feelings of fear, anger, depression, and doubt — as well as gratitude and love. Keep a journal to explore and release your innermost feelings. Work with a counselor or therapist. Don’t neglect your emotional self.

Level Five: The Nature of Mind. Mental anxiety is often another part of cancer. The mind can work for or against you, depending on your focus. To avoid feeling overwhelmed, examine your thoughts and beliefs and see if they are serving you. When fear and doubt are replaced with clarity and understanding, anxiety often diminishes. Ask yourself, "What are the blessings in my life? What am I truly grateful for?"

Level Six: Life Assessment. It is very empowering to discover the deepest meaning and purpose of your life, especially in the face of cancer. Answering three important questions can help clarify your priorities and liberate enormous time, energy, and resources for healing:

  • What is the meaning and purpose of my life?
  • What are my most important goals for the coming year?
  • How do I want to be remembered by those whom I love?

Level Seven: The Nature of Spirit. There is no better time than now to fully honor and embrace your spiritual essence. It is the source not only of the love, joy, and fulfillment that we all seek, but physical healing as well. Explore this through meditation, reflection, prayer, time in nature, and sharing with loved ones. Remember that your body needs love and care, but your mind, heart, and spirit need and deserve these as well.

Holistic Cancer Treatments and Complimentary Medicine

Cancer and Complimentary Medicine

http://howtotreatcancer.com/

One thing I’ve noticed since being diagnosed with cancer is the animosity between conventional and alternative approaches to the disease. It can be quite contentious, no doubt because the stakes are so high. The lines are drawn: Western vs. Eastern; big business vs. folk culture; MDs vs. doctors of chiropractic, naturopathy and homeopathy; pharmaceuticals vs. herbs. Both sides in this civil war have their weaknesses and blind spots.

Conventional medicine is misguided when it treats the human body as a machine to be serviced by white-coated mechanics. We are complex creatures who are much more than the sum of our parts. With apologies to Renee Descartes, our minds do influence our bodies in profound ways. The medical establishment is also remiss in not focusing more on prevention as the first line of defense against disease and in not seeing nutrition as a vital part of treatment.

http://www.naturalcancertreatments.com/

Alternative medicine is dangerous whenever it touts exotic cure-alls. There are no magic elixirs that can put everything right, even if they do come from a prehistoric valley in Utah (Dr. Wallach’s colloidal minerals) or from Himalayan-grown amalaki (Zrii), or from the inner leaf of the Aloe Vera plant (Ambrotose). Proper diet is central to maintaining or restoring good health, but not every medical condition can be fixed orally.

Dr. Ralph Moss offers sage advice in his CancerDecisions.com newsletter:

"Cancer is a complex disease. It requires professional help. Regardless of the sometimes uncaring attitude of certain errant members of the medical profession, one should not reject everything that conventional medicine has to offer in favor of a regimen discovered on the Internet. The answer is not simply to construct a do-it-yourself program, but to find expert and sympathetic guidance in the rapidly expanding realm of complementary oncology."

I like the term "complimentary." It is built into the approach of the Memorial Cancer Center where I am a client. (I am not a patient, but more on that in another post.) They proclaim, "By integrating complimentary therapies with traditional medicine, we will take a holistic approach to cancer medicine that addresses patients’ physical, emotional and spiritual needs."

A dose of humility is in order for professionals of every stripe. When it comes to medicine no one has all the answers; everyone is still practicing.

Brain Tumor

Brain Tumor

A brain tumor is an abnormal mass of cell growth that occurs in the brain. Read more about it here.

http://howtotreatcancer.com/

Brain Tumor

When there is a growth of an abnormal mass of cells, or tissue, in the brain, it is referred to as a brain tumor. Brain tumors are generally classified as primary or secondary. A primary brain tumor is the type that develops in the brain itself and can either be malignant or benign. A secondary brain tumor, on the other hand, is the type that begins in another part of the body and spreads to the brain. Secondary brain tumors are more common than primary brain tumors.

Brain tumors that are benign usually grow more slowly, can be removed more easily, according to where they are located, and the probability of them recurring is lower compared to cancerous brain tumors. Also, non-cancerous tumors do not affect the surrounding tissues; however, their growth can result in pressure being applied to sensitive parts of the brain.

Cancerous brain tumors usually grow faster and destroy or invade the surrounding tissues of the brain. Nevertheless, unlike the cancers that grow in other parts of the body, primary cancerous brain tumors usually do not spread to the other parts of the body.

Although it can be a challenge to treat brain tumors, these days with better technology and advanced methods of treatment, physicians have been successfully treating several kinds of brain tumors.

What are the Indications of Brain Tumors?

The location, type, and size of the brain tumor are determining factors of its symptoms. The symptoms may occur due to the tumor damaging a certain part of the brain or pressing against a nerve. The tumor could also cause the build up of fluids in the cranium or lead to the swelling of the brain.

The following are some of the indications of a brain tumor:

  • Headaches, which generally worsens in the morning.
  • Changes in hearing, vision, or speech.
  • Memory problems.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Changes in the ability to concentrate, personality, or mood.
  • Problems in walking or balancing.
  • Tingling or numbness in the limbs.
  • Convulsions or seizures of muscles.

None of these indications are of course sure signs of the occurrence of a brain tumor, because they could be signs of other conditions too. Hence, if these symptoms should occur it is advisable to consult a doctor as fast as possible in order to get it diagnosed and get the problem treated.

Treatment Options for Brain Tumor

There are various types of treatment options for those affected with brain tumor, according to the stage and the type of the tumor, such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or surgery. Sometimes, a combination of these treatments may be provided.

Usually, surgery is the treatment option that is chosen for most brain tumors. The surgical procedure that involves the opening of the skull is referred to as craniotomy, wherein general anesthesia is used. Plus, pain control treatment will be provided at all stages of the disease. Also, treatment will be provided for alleviating the side effects of the therapy as well as to mitigate emotional problems. These treatments are known as palliative care, supportive care, or symptom management. It is best to discuss with the doctor about which type of treatment to opt for and what the results will be.

Cervical Cancer Alternative Treatments

Cervical Cancer and its Alternative Treatments

http://howtotreatcancer.com/

Learn more about Cervical Cancer including its most common symptoms and options for treatment including alternative and conventional treatments.

Cervical cancer is cancer of the cervix, which is found at the neck of the womb, and as such this is a cancer that can only affect women. It is a carcinoma which is formed of squamous cells, and can take a number of years to develop.

Cervical cancer is formed when cells of the cervix undergo changes and become abnormal. Although these are not initially cancerous, they can become so over time, and as such we should all make sure that these are caught early by going for regular screening sessions.

Causes

There are a few very specific causes of cervical cancer, one of which is the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). This virus is responsible for nearly all cases of cervical cancer, and so without catching HPV it is very difficult to become a victim.

The most common way to catch the virus is through unprotected sex, but this usually leads to no symptoms as many of us are able to deal with the virus without being affected in any way. Only with a small proportion of women does it lead on to cause cancer.

The more sexual partners we have, therefore, the more chance we have of catching the virus. However, by starting to have sex at a younger age and by using the contraceptive pill for long periods of time, we also put ourselves at greater risk, as we would through smoking. Nearly all cases of cervical cancer also occur in women over 35, meaning it is far more likely for women in this age group to become victims.

Symptoms

Due to the position of the cervix, it is not easy for us to catch the signs of cervical cancer until it is too late. Vaginal bleeding outside of the natural menstrual cycle, any unnatural discharges, pain or discomfort during intercourse and vaginal bleeding after the menopause could all be symptoms, but they could also be symptoms of far less serious conditions.

The most common way for us to check for signs of cervical cancer is through cervical screening. This reveals the early appearance of any abnormal cells allowing them to be treated at an early stage, and is our best defense against developing full-blown cervical cancer that requires serious treatment.

Standard Treatment

The standard forms of treatment are the same as for most other cancers, involving surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or a combination of all three. When caught early, only minor surgery may be required. However, for more advanced stages of the disease, a full hysterectomy may be required, preventing the possibility of having children. At this advanced stage, the success rate drops significantly, and it can also have a devastating psychological impact.

Alternative Treatments

The standard treatments for cervical cancer can be harsh, and as such it is in our interests to consider the alternative treatments available. Luckily, there are many alternative therapies now available for the treatment of cervical cancer that are far more natural than their standard counterparts and are far more kind, without suffering from any drop in success levels.

One option is to use Formula DEG. This contains a natural version of chemotherapy through the presence of canendula, and is a successful formula which can be taken either by itself or in combination with any other alternative treatments.

One of the best alternative therapies for cervical cancer that has been proven to have high levels of success is bio-photonic light treatment. This type of treatment concerns the need to restore the natural energy in our cells which are negatively affected by the cancer. They lose energy rapidly when they are affected, and this type of treatment seeks to restore the balance.

It is completely non-invasive, and instead works by using a bio-photonic machine which charges and reprograms the cells so that they reverse the deterioration that is present through the onset of the disease. It is hugely important for the cells to be packed full of energy to lead to the most beneficial treatment of the disease, and by utilizing the power of a powerful electronic field created by the machine, this can be achieved.

This is quite often used alongside other alternative therapies, one of which comes in the form of emotional freedom techniques. These are all concerned with restoring the body to a natural and healthy state after it has been affected by a trauma or stress previously in our lives, which we may not even know about.

All of these techniques are not new, and have been proven to yield positive results in a number of patients. They don’t only have the benefit of being successful, but they also have the added benefit of being far less intrusive, and can even be a pleasant experience, which is all helpful for healing our bodies.

The Mariposas Clinic Spain provide a number of cervical cancer alternative treatments as well as natural treatments for other forms of cancer and illnesses.

Diagnosis, Causes, Symptoms, treatment And Prognosis of Liver Cancer

 http://howtotreatcancer.com/

Liver Cancer – Diagnosis, Causes, Symptoms, treatment And Prognosis.

Liver cancer also known as primary or metastatic hepatic carcinoma is a fairly rare form of cancer in the western world (1% of all cancers) but much more common in Africa and parts of Asia (10% to 50% of all cancers). It is much more prevalent in men and incidence increases with age. Liver cancer is rapidly fatal, usually within 6 months from gastrointestinal hemorrhage, hepatic failure or metastasis.

TYPES OF LIVE CANCER
Most primary liver tumors are known as hepatomas (hepatocellular carcinoma and primary lower cell carcinoma). Some primary liver cancers originate in the bile duct and these are known as cholangiomas. Some rare liver cancers include Kupffer cell sarcoma and hepatoblastomas (which occur almost exclusively in children and are usually respectable and curable). Metastatic liver cancer is 20 times more common than primary liver cancer and after cirrhosis this is the leading form of liver related death.

liver cancer treatments review

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
Liver cancer does not normally cause symptoms until it is in an advanced stage.
Clinical effects of advanced liver cancers include:
1.A mass in the right upper side.
2.Tender, nodular liver on palpation
3.Severe pain in the epigastrium or upper right side
4.Weight loss, anorexia, weakness, fever
5.Occasional jaundice or ascites (fluid in the abdomen)

CAUSOF LIVER CANCER
The exact cause of liver cancer is unknown in adults but in children it may be a genetic disease. Adult liver carcinomas may result from environmental exposure to carcinogens such as mold, contrast media (no longer in use), androgens and oral estrogens, the hepatitis B virus or by damage to the liver due to cirrhosis caused by too much prolonged imbibing of alcohol.

DIAGNOSIS
Liver cancer is difficult to diagnose in the presence of cirrhosis, but several tests can help identify it: The combination of an imaging study (ultrasound, CT, or MRI scans) and an elevated blood level of alpha-fetoprotein will most effectively diagnose liver cancer, electrolyte studies may indicate increased sodium retention, a liver biopsy can make a definitive diagnosis.

TREATMENT
Treatments for primary liver cancer depend on the extent (stage) of the disease, age, overall health, feelings and personal preferences. Surgery is the most effective treatment for primary liver cancer, but this is not always possible due to the size or position of the tumor. Radiofrequency ablation is an option for people with small, unresectable hepatocellular tumors and for some types of metastatic liver cancers. During this procedure, the hepatic artery (the artery from which liver cancers derive their blood supply) is blocked, and chemotherapy drugs are injected between the blockage and the liver. Cryoablation may be an option for people with inoperable primary and metastatic liver cancers. Removing the whole liver and replacing it with a liver from another person is another possible form of treatment for primary liver cancer.

Even when treatments fail to provide much improvement in the liver cancer itself, pain and other signs and symptoms caused by liver cancer can be aggressively treated to improve quality of life. In general, the treatments available for children are the same as for adults, and the best approach depends on the stage and type of cancer as well as the child’s age and overall health.

PROGNOSIS
Prognosis is poor when cancer is advanced, but for small tumors that are confined to the liver, ablative therapies are palliative and surgical resection or liver transplantation is sometimes curative.

Prostate Cancer Treatment and its Effects on Sexual Performance

Prostate Cancer Treatment and its Effects on Sexual Performance

 http://howtotreatcancer.com/

Prostate cancer is common and affects a huge percentage of men around the world. Unfortunately erectile dysfunction is a very real side effect of such a radical surgery. But men can get real and very discrete solutions with online prescriptions such as Viagra.

More than half a million Americans will die of cancer this year, and in men, prostate cancer is second only to lung cancer as a cause of death. Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in America, affecting about 16 percent of men. According to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, more than 186,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2008, and more than 28,000 men will die from the disease. A new case occurs every two-and-a-half minutes, and a man dies from prostate cancer every 19 minutes.

When it’s caught early, prostate cancer can be stopped in a majority of men. But this disease, not to mention its treatment, can have a profound effect on a man’s ability to perform sexually.

prostate cancer treatments
Duration of erectile dysfunction following surgery

If a man requires prostate surgery, or radical prostatectomy, for prostate cancer, his life, especially his sex life, may be changed forever. It is important to remember that surgery of any kind is a traumatic procedure and it takes time for the body to heal and recover. In the event of this type of surgery, the ability to achieve an erection will also take time, but many men will see an improvement in their erections over time, especially men who had no difficulty achieving a good erection before the surgery.

In the first three months to a year following radical prostatectomy, most men will not be able to achieve a spontaneous erection, and will probably require an erectile dysfunction medication that can be bought through an online pharmacy, such as Viagra, to attain an erection.

Radiation therapy

Unlike radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer, radiation therapy may cause problems slowly and over time. The main cause of erectile dysfunction following radiation is damage to the blood vessels supplying the nerves responsible for erections.

Cryosurgery

Cryosurgery, or the technique of using extreme cold to treat tumors in cancer, can have permanent negative effects. When the prostate gland is frozen the nerve bundles controlling erections can often be permanently damaged.

Treating erectile dysfunction after prostate cancer treatment

Viagra is an oral erectile dysfunction medication that works by promoting increased blood flow to produce an erection when the penis is manually stimulated, and can be obtained through a reputable online pharmacy. Viagra does not improve sex drive, only erections. Studies have shown that men with erectile dysfunction after prostatectomy respond well to Viagra if the nerve bundles on both sides of the prostate are intact. But Viagra is normally not effective if one or both nerve bundles have been damaged.

Other possible solutions to helping a man regain his facility to produce an erection after prostate treatment include penile medication injections, use of a vacuum constriction or vacuum erection device (which is very costly), or a penile implant, a prosthetic device surgically implanted inside the penis.

The bottom line is that a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test for prostate cancer is recommended annually for men over 50, or even earlier for men with a family history of prostate cancer. Without our health we’ve got nothing, and nothing makes a man feel like less of a man than the inability to perform. So you need to take care of yourself, and know all the medical options that exist for you in today’s modern world.

Symptoms and Treatment of Colon Cancer

Symptoms of Colon Cancer

 http://howtotreatcancer.com/

Colon cancer is a cancer of large intestine (colon) or rectum (end of colon). What are the symptoms of colon cancer? Read on to get the information about colon cancer.

Colon is the last part of the digestive system. It is a tubular, muscular organ that measures about 4 feet in length. Its main function is to extract salt and water from the solid wastes, before being eliminated from the body and to store and control an elimination of fecal matter. Colon cancer begins in the large intestine (colon) or it starts at the end of the colon, rectum. It is also known as colorectal cancer. Some other rare types of colon cancer are carcinoid tumors, lymphoma, sarcomas and lymphoma. Cancer of colon and rectum is the forth-leading cause of death by cancer in females and the third-leading cause in males. According to the American Cancer Society, every year approximately 1,12,000 people are diagnosed with colon cancer and about 41,000 people are diagnosed with rectal cancer. Well, what are the causes of colon cancer?

Causes of Colon Cancer

In most cases, colon cancer starts as small, benign clumps of cells, known as adenomatous polyps. Over time, these polyps enlarge and degenerate to develop adenocarcinomas, a type of colon cancer. People with adenomatous polyposis syndrome are at the greater risk of colon cancer. This type of colon cancer is more common in the people below the age of 40 years. In case of hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer syndrome, colon cancer may develop without the precursor polyps. It is generally related to genetic abnormality.

People with ulcerative colitis or Crohn colitis, uterine or ovarian cancer or breast cancer, present or in the past, and people with family history of colon cancer are also more vulnerable to colon cancer. Some other risk factors are obesity, cigarette smoking and diet (not having high-fiber diet). Abdominal pain and tenderness in the lower abdomen are the early symptoms of colon cancer. What are other signs and symptoms of colon cancer?

Symptoms of Colon Cancer

In most types of cancer, no symptoms are noticed in the early stage. That’s why the cancer remains undetected until it reaches the advanced stage. The same happens in case of colon cancer. Many people don’t experience noticeable symptoms during the early stage of the disease. When the symptoms appear, they may vary in severity, depending upon size and location of the cancer. There are significant changes in the bowel habits such as constipation or diarrhea. There are certain changes in the consistency of stool for longer than two weeks. You may experience abdominal pain with a bowel movement, persistent abdominal discomfort such as pain, gas or cramps.

There is chronic rectal bleeding, which is associated with iron deficiency anemia, fatigue and weakness. Sometimes, rectal bleeding can be detected through a fecal occult blood test. When the tumor enlarges, there may be a partial or complete blockage of colon. In such condition, there are certain symptoms of bowel obstruction such as abdominal pain, abdominal distension, rectal pain, vomiting, nausea and unexplained weight loss. There may be a sensation of incomplete evacuation even after the bowel movement. Whenever you notice the changes in the consistency of stool or presence of blood in stool, you should immediately consult the doctor for an accurate diagnosis.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Colon Cancer

colon cancer
Most colon cancers are caused by adenomatous polyps. Screening can be done to detect polyps before they grow to develop cancer. If colon cancer is detected in the early stage, there are more chances to cure it. Some of the common screening and diagnostic procedures for colon cancer are stool blood test, stool DNA test, flexible sigmoidoscopy, barium enema, colonoscopy and virtual colonoscopy. Once a person is diagnosed with colon cancer, certain tests including chest X-ray, abdominal CT scan and MRI scan are performed to determine the stage of the cancer and to detect whether colon cancer is spread to liver or lungs.

The treatment option for colon cancer is decided depending upon the stage of cancer. There are three major treatment options such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery. In surgical procedures, the cancerous part of colon is removed, known as colostomy. In case of inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis or familial adenomatous polyposis, entire colon and rectum is removed. If the cancer is in the early stage and localized in a polyp, then it can be removed completely during colonoscopy.

Colon cancer is, no doubt, a life-threatening disease. Since the symptoms of colon cancer appear mostly in the last stage, it is better to avoid them by regular screening and following a healthy lifestyle. There are a number of options for colon cancer screening such as annual fecal occult blood testing, colonoscopy every 10 years, flexible sigmoidoscopy and barium enema every five years. In addition, it is very important to maintain the healthy habits such as having high-fiber and low-fat diet, quit smoking and alcoholism and maintaining a healthy body weight. Your diet should be rich in vegetables, fruits and whole grains. Whole grains consist of fibers, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, which may play a significant role in the prevention of colon cancer. So, be healthy and enjoy life!
